Food Security, Online Resources & Donations

Many Americans are out of work due to the pandemic and placed in situations where they have no choice but to ask for help. One of the struggles is food security. We often receive food donations on the first Wednesday of the month.

Food security (sometimes called Food Insecurity) is defined as lacking reliable access to a sufficient quality of affordable, nutritious food.

  • 60% of the population in the U.S.A. are food insecure.
  • 4.6% of adults 50 and above are food insecure in the Denver area, a 2018 study estimated.

Vast improvements in social services have made access to food banks relatively easy. So, if you have internet access, these are some online resources to start:

Project Angel Heart delivers meals to people living with life-threatening illnesses each week. Professional chefs & registered dietitians prepare thousands of delicious meals from scratch and tailor them to meet the ill’s medical and dietary needs. Neighbors living with HIV/AIDS, kidney/heart/lung disease, and other illnesses receive meals delivered by volunteers free of charge and ideal when the city government recommends quarantine.

Project Angel Heart’s address is 4950 Washington Street Denver, Colorado 80216. They can also be contacted by phone: (303) 830-0202.

Hunger Free Colorado: Hunger Free Colorado connects people to food resources to meet existing needs and drives policy, systems and social change to end hunger.

The nonprofit organization was founded in 2009 from a merger of the Colorado Anti-Hunger Network and the Colorado Food Bank Association, with funding support from The Denver Foundation and Kaiser Permanente. Hunger Free Colorado brings a unified, statewide voice to the issue and solutions surrounding hunger, with a goal to ensure all Coloradans have access to affordable, nutritious food.

Food Bank of The Rockies: The largest hunger-relief organization in the Rocky Mountain region. Their programs include partnerships with Hunger Relief efforts throughout Colorado and Wyoming, acting as a distribution hub for food, essentials, and logistical resources.

The Feeding America Network: In a country that wastes billions of pounds of food each year, it is almost shocking that anyone in America goes hungry. Yet every day, millions of children and adults do not get the meals they need to thrive. We work to get nourishing food – from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers – to people in need. At the same time, we also seek to help the people we serve to build a path to a brighter, food-secure future.

FoodPantries.org: This is a national directory of Food Banks, Soup Kitchens, and non-profit organizations committed to fighting hunger. The following link is for Colorado.
