Free Program for LGBTQ Caregivers!

Here is information about an important study for the LGBTQ+ community.  Aging with Pride: IDEA (Innovations in Dementia Empowerment and Action) at the University of Washington is offering a free program for individuals with memory loss and their care partners. Either the person with memory loss or their care partner must be LGBTQ+. The program includes nine individualized sessions with a trained coach and focuses on problem solving, improving communication, and low impact exercise. The sessions are virtual, using easy video chatting.  Compensation is provided for completing phone interviews, and the program is available in all 50 states.

LGBTQ+ older adults are often isolated and difficult to connect with and experiencing cognitive difficulties can increase social isolation.

The National LGBT Health and Aging Center examines the health and aging needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults. Understanding aging and health illuminates inequalities and reminds us that resilience often emerges from adversity.

The landmark study Aging with Pride: National Health, Aging, Sexuality and Gender Study is the first federally-funded longitudinal national project designed to better understand the aging, health, and well-being of LGBTQ midlife and older adults and their families.

With over 2,400 LGBTQ adults ranging in age from 50 to over 100, this project deepens our understanding of how various life experiences are related to changes in aging, health and well-being over time. The findings paint a vivid portrait of the lives of LGBTQ midlife and older adults, documenting the interplay of risk and resilience to further understand those reaching their full aging and health potential and those most at-risk of health, social and economic disparities.

This project is a collaboration with 17 community agencies serving LGBTQ older adults in every census division throughout the U.S. The project is funded through a federal grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA).
